WATERING Soak thoroughly when watering, then let compost dry out before watering again. Seedlings need more constant moisture. When plants are actively growing, they need more water. Need humidity and good air movement around the plants.
TEMPERATURE Intermediate - 55 to 60º nights and 70 to 85º days is ideal Prefer 10 to 20º differential between night/day. Higher temperatures up to 95º can be tolerated if shading, humidity and air circulation is provided.
FOOD AND LIGHT Fertilize with a high-nitrogen formula (20-20-20) when plants are potted in fir bark and in active growth - once a month when not growing. Pots should be flushed out once a month with clear water to clear away fertilizer salts. Provide as much light as possible without burning. Leaves should be a medium green color. Provide more shade for seedlings and for plants when in bloom.
WHEN TO POT When new growth begins to root, or just as new growth starts.
POTTING MEDIA Fill bottom 1/4 of pot with broken crock. Use dampened osmunda and force firmly into pot. With bark, use one piece of crock and large pieces of bark in bottom of pot. Cattleyas also do well in slate or red and black lava rock. Keep four to five pseudobulbs together when dividing a plant. After repotting, do not water for about two weeks, but fog-spray foliage to reduce drying. Resume watering as new roots appear.
